Introduction

For women over 40, weight loss can be a challenging journey. With hormonal changes, slower metabolism, and busy lifestyles, shedding those extra pounds might feel daunting. Fortunately, GLP-1 medications have emerged as a promising solution for effective weight management. In this blog post, we will explore the best GLP-1 medications for weight loss, how to maintain your progress while on these medications, and how Ample Health and Wellness can support you throughout your GLP-1 journey.

Understanding GLP-1 Medications

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) medications are a class of drugs developed to treat type 2 diabetes. They work by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which helps regulate blood sugar levels, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite. GLP-1 medications are often needle injections or shots, but there are oral forms now available. Additionally, newer created medications in this class have GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide), which also affects insulin levels and blood sugar just as GLP-1. The effects of these type of drugs make GLP-1 medications a powerful and revolutionary tool for weight loss and weight management.

Top GLP-1 Medications for Weight Loss

  1. Semaglutide (Wegovy®, Ozempic®, Rybelsus®)

Semaglutide is one of the most popular GLP-1 medications for weight loss. In addition to weight loss,  Semaglutide is used to lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. Semaglutide works to increase insulin levels which in turn lowers the amount of glucagon release, delaying stomach emptying and reducing appetite and the amount of food you eat. Semaglutide is available as a pill and as injections (shots). Many clinical trials have shown significant weight reduction in individuals using Semaglutide compared to those on a placebo. Wegovy®, the higher-dose injection of Semaglutide, is FDA approved for weight loss and chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight conditions. Ozempic®, a weekly injection, and Rybelsus®, a pill, are primarily marketed as blood glucose lowering medications for type 2 diabetics to use along with diet and exercise.

  1. Liraglutide (Saxenda®, Victoza®)

Liraglutide, marketed as Saxenda® for weight management and Victoza® for lowering blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, is another effective GLP-1 medication. Liraglutide is used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise to improve blood sugar in adults and in children (at least 10 years old) who have type 2 diabetes. Liraglutide is taken as a daily injection and has been shown to help users lose a substantial amount of weight. Saxenda® is also given as a daily injection and is especially beneficial for those who struggle with portion control and overeating.

  1. Exenatide (Bydureon®, Byetta®)

Exenatide is available in two forms: Byetta® (a twice-daily injection) and Bydureon® (a once-weekly injection). Exenatide signals your body to release insulin after a meal, blocking the liver from releasing sugar into the blood. This action results in reduced appetite and controlled blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes (adults and children 10 years or older). While not as commonly used for weight loss, Exenatide can still be an effective option for some individuals, particularly those with concurrent type 2 diabetes.

     4. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound®)

Tirzepatide, marketed under the brand names Mounjaro® and Zepbound®, is the latest addition to the GLP-1 medication family. It is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, meaning it targets both the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP-1 receptors. This dual action results in more significant weight loss and better glucose control compared to traditional GLP-1 medications. Clinical trials have demonstrated impressive weight reduction in individuals using Tirzepatide, making it a promising option for those seeking effective weight management solutions. As with other GLP-1 medications, it is essential to combine Tirzepatide with a balanced diet and regular exercise to maximize its benefits. Mounjaro® is primarily marketed as a blood sugar lowering agent and Zepbound® is promoted as a GIP/GLP-1 medication for weight loss and weight management.

Maintaining Weight Loss on GLP-1 Medications Requirements

  1. Adopting a Balanced Diet

While GLP-1 medications help reduce appetite, maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for sustained weight loss. Focus on whole foods, lean proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of vegetables. Avoid processed foods and sugary beverages to maximize your results.

  1. Staying Active

Regular physical activity is essential for weight maintenance. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. Incorporate strength training exercises to build muscle and boost your metabolism.

  1. Utilizing Mindfulness and Stress Management Techniques

Stress can trigger overeating and weight gain. Practice mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and yoga to manage stress effectively. These practices can also improve your overall well-being and mental health.

  1. Regular Monitoring and Support

Keep track of your progress by regularly monitoring your weight and health markers. Having a support system, like a wellness coach, can provide the accountability and encouragement you need to stay on track.

  1. This is an insightful post! I appreciate the detailed explanation of GLP-1 medications and how they can help with weight loss, especially for women over 40. I’ve heard that combining tirzepatide and semaglutide together can offer even more significant results. It’s great to see these options being explored as potential solutions for weight loss, but I would love to hear more about how this combination works and any potential benefits or side effects. Thanks for sharing this valuable information!

    • Hello Jack, thank you for reading and responding to my post. Tirzepatide and semaglutide have been combined for several individuals (I am a candidate). While one medication was not as effective for me, adding the additional treatment for about 2 months helped jumpstart my weight journey after I had stalled for about 3 months. Now I was under medical supervision, as these medications can have serious side effects. But with the guidance of my health care provider and a dedicated health/nutrition coach, I did well. That is what sparked my interest in coaching (blogging) as well and helping other women like me. Now I am on monotherapy and down 110 pounds (with about 40lbs more to go). It has been a long road, but I am forever grateful for these medications (and my health coach), and I want to help others like me.
