Obesity and Why Do We Gain Weight

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is an epidemic and over 4 million people worldwide die from obesity related causes each year (2023).  Obesity, simply put, is too much or an excessive amount of fat. Obesity (and being overweight) is often associated with having an imbalance of energy.  This means the energy (calories) consumed is more than the energy expended or gotten rid of.  Obesity is diagnosed when a person’s body mass index (BMI) is over 30.  In addition to too many calories (energy) consumed there are other factors that can play a heavy role in obesity.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) have identified many common factors which cause or contribute to obesity (2022):

  1. Social determinants of health (SDOH): This is our surroundings, community and environment. The items or happenings we are exposed to or have access to at work, home and play. Basically, where we live, work, and play has an influence on the choices we make to support our health. For instance, if you live in an area labeled as a “food dessert”, and do not have adequate transportation, it can be difficult to go to a grocery store or market where healthy food options are available.
  2. Genetics:  Genes we obtain from our family members may be a cause for obesity. Monogenic obesity is a certain type of gene which researchers have found is inherited within families.
  3. Sleep, Food, and Activity: Lack of sleep and rest have been linked to common illnesses such as diabetes, which can contribute to weight gain. Consuming too much food and drink also can cause weight gain. And not being active, leading a sedentary lifestyle, can bring about unwanted pounds.
  4. Certain Illnesses and Medications: Many illnesses and the medications used to treat certain diseases can cause weight gain. For instance, taking long-term steroid medication is known to cause weight gain.

So, there are many reasons for obesity. A few of these reasons can be changed.  One of the first ways to start changing is becoming aware of which reason(s) may be contributing to obesity for you. Once you have made an identification list, consider options to combat obesity and begin to incorporate changes into your life. These changes can include (but are not limited to) increasing physical activity, changing eating patterns, getting more sleep/rest or making a plan for improving SDOH.

Semaglutide: A Game Changer in Medical Weight Loss

Semaglutide was originally developed to help treat type-2 diabetes. However, this medication has gained popularity for its amazing ability to help people lose weight. Marketed as Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy, many people taking this revolutionary drug are achieving their weight loss goals and seeing results that are also improving their overall health.

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist. This class of medication acts like the natural hormone, GLP-1, which is already in our body. This hormone helps us to control blood sugar and appetite. By having this effect, Semaglutide is a great companion to support a weight loss journey. Along with dietary changes and a plan for exercising, Semaglutide can help you to lose stubborn pounds.

Although this medication has its benefits, certain side effects can be experienced. Side effects can include nausea, bloating, constipation, and injection site irritation. So, make sure you work closely with a healthcare provider to try to minimize side effects.

In conclusion, Semaglutide is a great advancement in weight loss and an extraordinary option for people struggling to lose weight. It can help support a weight loss plan, so you are able to achieve goals for improved health and well-being. Consult a healthcare provider to get proper guidance to determine if this revolutionary medication is the right option for you.

Tirzepatide: A Revolutionary Weight Loss Drug for Obesity

Tirzepatide is a dual receptor agonist. It is marketed as Mounjaro. It was created for type 2 diabetics but its ability to aid in weight loss made it a popular choice to prescribe for obese patients. It acts on the hormones GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). Both hormones work to control appetite and blood glucose levels. Because of its “dual action”, Tirzepatide is one of the most effective medication options for weight loss.

Tirzepatide had astonishing results in clinical testing. It helped with weight loss, as well as improvements in symptoms related to heart disease were also demonstrated. Although weight loss benefits are outstanding, Tirzepatide can produce medication side effects. These side effects can include nausea, bloating, constipation, and injection site irritation. So, make sure you work closely with a healthcare provider to try to minimize side effects.

To be most effective, Tirzepatide should be used in conjunction with diet changes and an exercise program. If you decide to take this medication, you should also have regular medical supervision. Talk with a health care provider to see if Tirzepatide is the medical weight loss option for you.

And remember that effective weight loss can be like a marathon. But no matter the pace, medications like Tirzepatide can help you to achieve your weight loss goals while improving your health and well-being.
