Weight Loss Shots: Which One to Choose?

In the world of weight loss solutions, people are continuously searching for effective ways to achieve their weight loss goals. Recently, shots (or injections) for weight loss have become a popular choice. Usually given under medical supervision, these types of shots have been shown to accelerate weight loss and provide an alternative, but effective, option to performing traditional diet and exercise regimens. In this blog post, we will look at a few options available for weight loss shots, briefly explore how these medications function and the potential benefits to those who are considering taking shots for maintaining or meeting weight loss goals.
So which injectable medication is the right choice? Let’s explore.
- Liraglutide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) agonist. This medication helps to suppress appetite, reduce cravings, and keeps you feeling fuller for long periods of time. Liraglutide is the active ingredient in Victoza® and Saxenda®. Victoza® is usually dosed once daily and Saxenda® is commonly dosed once per week. Both brands come in easy-to-use metered injection pens. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, dyspepsia, and abdominal pain. Contraindications to taking liraglutide include hypersensitivity to the drug, pregnancy, history of pancreatitis, family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MENS2). Caution should also be taken if you have a history of low mood disorder or depression. Liraglutide research studies showed people losing 5-10% of their body weight when compared to placebo.
 - Semaglutide is a GLP-1 RA (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist). Like liraglutide, semaglutide slows down digestion and delays gastric emptying. Semaglutide injections are marketed as Wegovy® and Ozempic®. Wegovy® and Ozempic® are once weekly injections packaged in easy-to-use metered pens. Research studies documented people losing as much 15-20% of their body weight when compared to placebo. Adverse side effects include (but not limited to) nausea, dyspepsia, diarrhea, constipation, pancreatitis. And like liraglutide, contraindications include hypersensitivity to the drug, pregnancy, history of pancreatitis, family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MENS2).
 - Tirzepatide is a GIP/GLP1-RA (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist). Tirzepatide is marketed as Mounjaro® and Zepbound®. These medications work by promoting insulin output, reducing hunger, and making you feel fuller for long periods of time after a meal. Both brands are weekly injections. Clinical trials and research showed people lost >20% of their body weight when compared to placebo. Most common side effects are nausea, bloating, diarrhea, pancreatitis, constipation, and dyspepsia. Common contraindications include hypersensitivity to the drug, pregnancy, history of pancreatitis, family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MENS2).
 - Vitamin B12 is a common shot given for weight loss. B12 is an essential nutrient for energy metabolism. Claims have been made that B12 injections boost energy levels, improve metabolism, and aid in weight loss. B12 injections are commonly given in conjunction with other weight loss medications, as it is not a lot of supporting evidence to support using the nutrient as a standalone weight loss solution.

The above list is not exhaustive. There are many more available weight loss shots or injections to consider. But before considering any weight loss shot, it is imperative to consult with a healthcare professional. Many health considerations and conditions must be assessed, as well as guidance will be needed to determine which weight loss injection is a suitable option. Additionally, weight loss shots should not be a standalone solution. Combining the medications with a balanced diet, regular exercise and lifestyle modifications will be crucial to incorporate for long-term success.
There are many weight loss shots available, and each medication has its own set of potential benefits and considerations. While some individuals may find success with these injections, it will be imperative to approach these medications as part of a holistic weight loss strategy. The key to weight loss success will lie in finding a balance between medical guidelines, healthy lifestyle choices, and realistic expectations. Always consult with a healthcare professional before embarking on any weight loss journey to ensure safety and effectiveness.
