Are Robot Lawn Mowers Worth It? What Busy Women Should Know Before Buying One

A tranquil landscape featuring a circular hedge and lush green grass, perfect for nature lovers.

I have officially reached the point in life where watching a robot cut the grass sounds a whole lot better than spending part of my weekend pushing a lawn mower. We already have robot vacuums cleaning floors, smart appliances helping in the kitchen, and apps automating everything from grocery shopping to bill payments. So, when I discovered that robotic lawn mowers can map a yard, follow a mowing schedule, navigate around obstacles, and return to a charging station on their own, I became curious.

But these machines aren’t inexpensive. That raises the obvious question: Are robot lawn mowers actually worth it or are they another expensive gadget we don’t really need? I did some research, and here’s what I found.

What Exactly Is a Robot Lawn Mower?

Think of a robot lawn mower as the outdoor cousin of a robot vacuum. Depending on the model, today’s robotic mowers can follow programmed schedules, map mowing zones, detect obstacles, navigate without traditional buried boundary wires, and return to their charging stations when needed.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll never touch your lawn again. Robot mowers primarily handle routine grass cutting. Edging, weeds, landscaping, leaves, shrubs, and other yard maintenance may still require attention. But if mowing is the chore that repeatedly eats into your weekend, automating most of it could make a noticeable difference.

The Real Benefit May Be Your Time

I talk a lot at Ample about nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, and sustainable habits. But there’s another part of wellness we sometimes overlook:

How much are we asking ourselves to do?

For many women over 40, the list is long: work, family, caregiving, cooking, cleaning, errands, appointments, exercise, and maintaining a home.

Then Saturday arrives and there’s the grass. But a robotic mower isn’t going to improve your health by itself. But a tool that removes a repetitive chore could give you something valuable back: time and energy. Maybe you use that time to take a walk. Maybe you meal prep. Maybe you spend it with your family. Or maybe you sit on the porch with a cup of coffee and do absolutely nothing. That counts, too.

So, Are Robot Lawn Mowers Worth It?

The answer is: it depends on your yard and what your time is worth to you. A robot mower may make sense if you:

  • Spend considerable time mowing every week
  • Pay someone regularly to cut your grass
  • Want your lawn maintained more consistently
  • Have a yard compatible with the mower’s navigation and slope capabilities
  • Would gladly trade a larger upfront expense for less routine lawn work

On the other hand, the investment may be harder to justify if your lawn is tiny, you genuinely enjoy mowing, your property has particularly challenging terrain, or you’re perfectly happy with your current lawn-care arrangement. Independent lawn care experts also point out that robotic mowers don’t eliminate every aspect of lawn maintenance. You may still need to handle edges and other landscaping tasks.

One Brand I Found While Researching: ANTHBOT

While researching wire-free robotic lawn mowers, I came across ANTHBOT, a company specializing in automated lawn-care technology. I have not personally tested an ANTHBOT mower, so I’m not presenting this as a personal product review. Instead, I looked at the company’s current products, independent testing, warranty information, and customer experiences before deciding whether I was comfortable sharing it with the Ample community.

ANTHBOT currently offers several types of robotic mowers. Its M-series includes compact models intended for smaller residential lawns, while its higher-end N8 combines mowing with additional functions such as mulching, grass collection, and sweeping. For example, the current M5 is designed for approximately 1/8 acre, while the M9 increases the recommended mowing area to approximately 1/4 acre. Both use RTK positioning and vision technology. The N8 is designed for larger areas (approximately 3/8 acre) and adds collection and sweeping capabilities.

You don’t necessarily need the most expensive model. Your lawn size, terrain, layout, desired features, and budget should determine which type makes sense for you.

What I Like and What I’d Consider Before Buying

What initially caught my attention was the wire-free approach. Not having to bury a perimeter wire can make installation more appealing, although technology-based navigation comes with its own considerations. Independent testing of the ANTHBOT M9 has found generally capable mowing, navigation, and obstacle avoidance, while also identifying some limitations. For example, docking was not always perfect during one independent test.

Customer experiences with support are also mixed. Some owners report positive experiences with their mowers, while others have reported navigation, technical-support, or communication frustrations. There are also examples of the company responding to customer concerns and working toward solutions.

ANTHBOT currently publishes warranty coverage for its products and provides return and support information on its website. Because policies can change, I’d review the current warranty, return policy, support terms, and recent customer feedback before purchasing. For a product that costs hundreds or potentially more than a thousand dollars, that’s simply smart shopping.

Before You Buy Any Robot Mower

Stunning Victorian home with a manicured lawn and vibrant landscaping.

Don’t choose one just because the technology looks impressive on social media. Consider:

  • Lawn size: Make sure the model is designed to cover your actual mowing area.
  • Terrain and slopes: Every mower has limitations.
  • Trees and obstacles: These can affect navigation depending on the technology used.
  • Edges and landscaping: You may still have some manual work to do.
  • Connectivity: Some smart features depend on an app, Wi-Fi, 4G, GPS/RTK, or other connectivity.
  • Warranty and support: This matters with any technology-heavy purchase.
  • Budget: Compare the upfront cost with what you currently spend—in money and time—on lawn care.

The goal isn’t to own the fanciest robot on the block. It’s to determine whether automation solves an actual problem in your life.

Sometimes Wellness Looks Like Doing Less

One part of my FRESH Framework is S — Simplify Your Environment. We often approach wellness by asking:

  • What else should I be doing?
  • What if sometimes the better question is:
  • What can I stop doing?

Simplifying your environment can mean meal prepping, organizing your kitchen, creating routines, using grocery delivery, or even allowing technology to handle a household chore that no longer needs your personal attention.

A robot lawn mower certainly isn’t a wellness necessity. But neither is spending your Saturday afternoon doing a chore that technology could reasonably handle while you’re doing something more meaningful to you.

Final Ample Thoughts

So, are robot lawn mowers worth it? For the right household, I can certainly see the appeal. The biggest benefit isn’t that a robot mower will somehow transform your health. It’s that it may give you some of your time back.

ANTHBOT is one option worth exploring if you’re interested in wire-free robotic lawn care, but compare the available models carefully and make sure your yard is compatible before investing.

Because at this stage of life, I’m becoming increasingly interested in tools that help us work smarter and not simply give ourselves one more thing to do. And if a robot wants to cut the grass while I sit on the porch? I am perfectly willing to let it. 😂
