Each year on June 19th, we celebrate Juneteenth—a day that commemorates freedom, resilience, hope, and progress. While Juneteenth holds deep historical significance, it also offers an opportunity for reflection. It invites us to consider not only where we have come from, but where we are going.
As a nurse practitioner, wellness coach, and woman over 40, I often think about freedom through a health and wellness lens. What does it mean to be free?
For many women, freedom is not just a historical concept. It is deeply personal. It is the freedom to live fully, move comfortably, enjoy meaningful relationships, pursue dreams, and care for ourselves in ways that support a long and healthy life. It is the freedom to make choices today that create a healthier future tomorrow.
1️⃣ Freedom From All-or-Nothing Thinking
One of the greatest barriers I see in women’s health is the belief that wellness must be perfect. Many women feel trapped by cycles of starting over.
A new diet.
A new program.
A new plan.
When perfection is not achieved, discouragement often follows. But true wellness freedom means letting go of the idea that every day must be perfect. Progress matters more than perfection.
One healthy meal matters.
One walk matters.
One positive choice matters.
Small actions repeated consistently often create the biggest transformations.
2️⃣Freedom from Chronic Dieting
Many women have spent years—sometimes decades—trying to lose weight. Diet culture often teaches us that health comes from restriction, guilt, and constantly chasing the next solution. But freedom may look different.
Freedom may mean learning how to nourish your body without fear. Freedom may mean enjoying food while still honoring your health goals. Freedom may mean focusing on sustainable habits rather than temporary fixes.
At Ample Health & Wellness, I believe women deserve a relationship with food that supports both health and enjoyment.
3️⃣Freedom to Advocate for Your Health
As women move through their 40s, 50s, and beyond, health becomes increasingly personal. Many women experience symptoms that are dismissed or minimized:
- Fatigue
- Weight gain
- Sleep changes
- Hormonal shifts
- Increased stress
Wellness freedom means asking questions. It means seeking information. It means partnering with healthcare professionals and becoming an active participant in your health journey.
Your concerns matter.
Your health matters.
Your voice matters.
4️⃣Freedom Through Knowledge
One of the most empowering things we can do is learn. When we understand how nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, hormones, and lifestyle affect our health, we are better equipped to make informed decisions.
Knowledge creates options.
Options create confidence.
Confidence creates change.
This is one reason I am so passionate about education. Every blog, video, newsletter, and conversation is an opportunity to help women better understand their bodies and make choices that support long-term wellness.
5️⃣Freedom to Care for Your Future Self
One of my favorite questions to ask women is: “What would your future self thank you for today?”
Would she thank you for drinking more water?
Taking a walk?
Scheduling that medical appointment?
Going to bed earlier?
Choosing a balanced meal?
The decisions we make today often become the foundation of our future health. Freedom is not only about where we are right now. It is also about creating opportunities for the years ahead.
A FRESH Start Perspective
At Ample Health & Wellness, I teach women through the FRESH Start Framework:
F – Food & Foundations: Building nutritional habits that support wellness.
R – Rewire the Mindset: Replacing perfectionism with progress.
E – Elevate Habits: Creating routines that support long-term success.
S – Simplify Your Environment: Making healthy choices easier.
H – Honor Whole Health: Supporting physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
To me, wellness freedom means creating a life where healthy habits feel supportive rather than restrictive.
Final Ample Thoughts
Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is precious. It reminds us of resilience, hope, courage, and progress. As you celebrate this year, I invite you to think about your own wellness journey. Where do you want more freedom?
Freedom from stress?
Freedom from unhealthy habits?
Freedom from self-doubt?
Freedom to live with greater energy and purpose?
Remember that wellness is not achieved in a single day. It is built one choice at a time. And every healthy choice you make is an investment in the life you want to live.
Happy Juneteenth!
